It’s the week of Thanksgiving in the U.S. That’s when the office becomes slower, people starts to taking times off. Frankly, my productivity decreases a little because of these changes. But it’s a really good time to think and reflect. When you are reading this post, please answer all my questions in your head.
Now, I want you to think about your life. Think all the way back to when you started to think about your career. Is it college? High school? or graduate school? What were you thinking? What was the plan back then?
As you thinking back, I want you to think about the people who rejected you. Think about the interviews that really sucked. Think about the most embarrassing moment of a interview. I’m sure you can think of something.
My most embarrassing moment is going to an interview for Stock Trader position, he asked me “what do you do for fun?”. I said “Equity Research”. He said “No. For fun. Real kind of fun!”, I was stumped….1 minutes silence and I couldn’t think of anything….Then I said “Music”. He followed up “What kind of music?”, in the same time, he opened up a Youtube page ready to search for whatever is coming out of my mouth. I was panicking …couldn’t think of anything..I was afraid to be judged on my taste of music. I also did’t want to look stupid. My mind just got frozen. I couldn’t say a thing. I don’t remember what I said after that, but there is a long period of silence. The point is, it’s EXTREMELY AWKWARD! My palm starts sweating as I’m typing this story.
You must have something like that as well. Who are the ones that make you nervous? What did you do? How did you feel? Do you hate them? or did you hate yourself for that?
Now let’s think of something else. Let’s think about those who guided you. Who are they? Professors? Mentor? Me? Or just a guy you met at a random conference? They helped you one way or the other. They could have ignored you but they choose to help you. They give you knowledge, insights, connections to someone you would have no chance connecting on your own. What do you want to say to them?
As you are answer all my question in your head, I want to to feel the feeling you are having right at this moment. This, my friend, is gratitude.
You’ve come along way now. Thinking about what are you doing now and where are you going. What’s your title and what will your title be 5 years from now. I want you to acknowledge yourself for all the progress you made. But you will never be who you are today, if not because all the experience and people, good or bad, you once had.
I’m grateful for everything. Not just those who helped me along the way, but also for those embarrassing experience and the people who didn’t end up helping me. You are going to be awesome, but cherish what you have right now. So for this 1 minute of your life after you read through this post, I suggest you stop absorbing new information for just 1 minute, and really be grateful for what you have today. Because only when you are grateful for everything, everything around you become great.
